How do I make a quiz or score responses?
Mark correct answers, turn on scoring, set a passing score, and choose whether respondents see their result.
Scoring turns a survey into a quiz, a knowledge check, a graded assessment or a
screener. You mark the correct answer on the questions you want to grade, and
Surbee scores every response against them.
Scoring is opt-in per question. Questions without a correct answer are not
scored, so you can mix graded questions with ordinary ones in the same survey.
Step 1: Mark the correct answers
Ask Surbee's AI in the editor's chat to set the answer key. Be specific about
what is correct and what each question is worth:
- "Question 2's correct answer is Paris."
- "Make question 5 worth 3 points."
- "For question 7, the correct options are Red and Blue. Give partial credit."
- "Accept 4 or four as the answer to question 3."
To check what has been set, ask "Which questions are scored, and what are the
correct answers?"
How answers are marked
- One-answer questions (such as Choice, Dropdown, Yes / No or Text): you can
list more than one accepted answer, and any of them earns full marks.
- Text answers are compared without regard to capital letters or extra
spaces, so "Paris" and " paris " both match. Spelling still has to match.
- Checkboxes, and Image choice with several picks: the correct options are
the full set the respondent must pick. With partial credit off, they must pick
exactly those options. With partial credit on, each correct pick earns a share
of the points and each wrong pick takes one share away. The score for a
question never goes below zero.
- Points: every scored question is worth 1 point unless you set another
value.
- An unanswered question scores zero.
Step 2: Turn on scoring
- In the editor, click Settings in the top bar.
- Open the Scoring tab.
- Turn on Score responses.
With it off, your answer keys are kept but nothing is scored.
Step 3: Choose what respondents see
On the same Scoring tab:
- Show score to respondent shows the result on the completion screen, for
example "You scored 8 of 10 (80%)".
- Show which answers were correct adds a list of the scored questions, each
marked Correct or Incorrect.
- Passing score sets a pass mark as a percentage. Respondents who reach it
see "You passed." and those below it see "You did not reach the passing
score." With it off, the score has no pass or fail.
When respondents are shown their score, it replaces your
ending page on the completion screen.
Where you see the scores
Each response stores its score: points earned, points possible, a percentage,
and pass or fail when a passing score is set. Exports include Score and
Score % columns along with the pass or fail result.
Scoring inside a repeating group
A scored field inside a repeating group
is worth its points once, however many entries the respondent adds. It counts as
correct if any entry has the right answer.
Tips for fair quizzes
- Scores are worked out when a response is submitted, so the editor's Preview
doesn't show them. After publishing, take the quiz on the live link once
correctly and once with mistakes to check the marking.
- For exams, look at the Integrity tab in the same settings panel. It can
randomize answer order and flag copy and paste. See
Survey settings.
- Turn on a time limit if the quiz should be timed.
