Read the Overview

What the headline numbers, charts and written recap on the Overview tab tell you about your survey.

The Overview tab is the first thing you see on a survey's Insights page. It gives you the health of your survey at a glance: how many people answered, how many finished, how long they took and how trustworthy the answers look.

Everything on the Overview follows the date range picker at the top of the page, which starts at Last 30 days. To see every response, choose All time.

The headline numbers

Four tiles sit across the top. Hover over the small help icon on any of them for an explanation using your own numbers.

  • Responses. How many responses were submitted in the date range, with the count from the last 7 days underneath. The help note shows the margin of error for your sample size, so you know how far any percentage on the page could be off.
  • Completion rate. The share of people who opened the survey and then submitted it. Around 70% is healthy for a short survey, and the tile is tagged Healthy, Below par or Low. If opens weren't recorded for these responses, the tile reads Not tracked.
  • Median time. Half of respondents finished faster than this and half slower. The average is shown underneath. The median is the more reliable figure, because a few very long sessions pull the average up.
  • Flagged by Cipher. How many responses Cipher scored below 60 or marked as unlikely to be genuine. It's tagged Clean when there are none, Worth a look when there are a few, and Review these when they make up 10% or more of your responses.

The main chart

Below the tiles is one large chart. Use View charts at the top of the page to choose which one it shows:

  • Responses over time. How many responses arrived each day or period. Switch between Total and By device to see one line per device type. When there's enough data, the Project button draws a projection of where the count is heading at the current pace.
  • Calendar. A calendar heatmap of which days were busiest.
  • Speed against trust. One dot per response, plotting how long it took against its Cipher score. Responses that were much faster than the median and scored below 80 are called out, because that is what a speeder looks like.
  • Map. Where your responses came from.

In the View charts menu, use the pin icon beside any chart to keep it on the page below the main chart. Pinned charts are remembered for that survey.

Breakdowns

Further down, smaller cards break your responses down:

  • Devices and Browsers. Switch between the two tabs on the same card.
  • Channels. Where respondents arrived from: Direct Link, Email, Social Media, Search or Referral, with the completion rate for each. Direct usually means the link was opened from an email app or a messaging app that doesn't pass on where it came from.
  • Countries. The top countries, estimated from each respondent's time zone.
  • Time to complete. How many responses fall into each time band, from Under 30s up to Over 10m.

The right-hand column

Your recap

At the top of the right-hand column is a card called Your weekly recap, Your monthly recap or similar, depending on the date range. Surbee's AI writes it from your response data. Click Read to open the full readout, which can include:

  • A short summary of how the survey is doing.
  • What stands out: up to four key takeaways.
  • Fix first: up to three questions that look like they're causing problems, each with a likely cause and one suggested fix.

The recap updates when new responses arrive. It doesn't use credits.

Cipher

The Cipher card shows the average Cipher score across your responses, out of 100, with a verdict: Looks genuine, Worth reviewing or Likely not genuine. A bar splits your responses into trusted, review and flagged.

Under Checks passed, each bar shows the share of responses that look clean on one check. A short bar points to the check pulling your score down, and the note at the bottom names the weakest one.

Answers

The Answers card shows how much of the survey people actually filled in. Every response here reached the end, so this is about blanks:

  • Answered everything
  • Left some blank
  • Mostly blank: fewer than a third of the questions answered.
  • Straightlined: gave the same answer to every row of a grid, usually by clicking straight down one column. Those answers carry very little information.

Per-question results

To read results question by question, you have a few options:

  • Export a PDF report or an Excel workbook from the Export menu. Both include every question's distribution, with counts, percentages and margins of error. See Export your results.
  • Open the Funnel tab to see how many people answered or skipped each question and how long they spent on it.
  • Open the Themes tab for open-ended questions, where written answers are grouped into themes.
  • Open the Results tab to read each person's answers in full.
