What the Funnel tab measures, how to spot problem questions, and what it can't tell you.
The Funnel tab on a survey's Insights page follows people from opening
your survey to answering every question. Use it to find questions that people
skip, linger on or leave at.
The Funnel follows the date range picker at the top of the Insights page.
The summary
At the top, a short note sums up how the survey is doing. Below it are four
numbers:
Opened. How many people opened the survey link. Older responses may show
Not tracked, because opens are only recorded on newer ones.
Submitted. How many people reached the end and sent a response.
Completion rate. Submitted responses out of everyone who opened the
survey, tagged Healthy (70% or more), Below par or Low.
Most skipped. The question left blank most often, and how many people
skipped it.
The chart under these numbers shows three stages: Opened, Submitted and
Answered all, where Answered all means submitted with no question left
blank. Each stage shows how many people dropped out before the next.
Where people left
When someone opens your survey and leaves before submitting, Surbee records the
question they were on and how they left. Once there's data, the Where people
left section shows:
How many people left partway through.
How they left, for example Closed the page, Switched tabs, Went
idle, Stuck on a question, Left mid-answer, Left right away,
Rushed, then quit or Submit failed. Hover over any of these for a
description.
A table of the Last question open before people left, how many left
there, the most common way they left, and how long they spent on it.
How far the people who left typically got, and how many were on a phone or
tablet.
If nobody has left partway yet, you'll see a note saying exit tracking is on.
Questions to look at
Surbee flags questions that stand out from the rest of your survey:
Often blank. Left blank by at least 3 people, and skipped at least twice as
often as your typical question (and by at least 15% of respondents).
Slow. Took at least twice as long as your typical question, and at least
15 seconds.
Flagged questions appear as cards under Questions to look at, each with a
short explanation of why it was flagged and what that usually means.
Every question
The Every question table lists each question with:
Answered. The share of submitted responses that answered it.
Left blank. How many people submitted the survey without answering it.
This usually means the question reads as unclear, optional or too personal.
Time. The typical time spent on it.
Sort by any column, or switch to Flagged to see only the flagged questions.
Answer rate by device
If at least 8 people answered on a phone and at least 8 on a desktop, the
Answer rate by device chart compares how often each question was answered on
each. If phone users answer a question at least 10 points less often, Surbee
points it out. Try that question on a phone yourself: the layout may be getting
in the way.
What the Funnel can't tell you
A few other limits to keep in mind:
Left blank counts skipped questions. The Answered and Left blank figures
come from submitted responses only. A question with a high Left blank count is
one people skipped and then carried on past. To see where people stopped, use
Where people left.
Opens are needed for the completion rate. For older responses where opens
weren't recorded, the completion rate shows Not tracked.
Small samples are noisy. With fewer than 20 submitted responses, the
summary note reads Too few responses to read much into this. Treat the
figures as a first look.
